Indonesia business visa requirements 2026

Foreign nationals visiting Indonesia for commercial purposes — meetings, negotiations, market research, conferences, or due diligence — generally need a business visa, not a work visa or KITAS. Understanding which visa applies to your situation, what it permits, and what it does not, is essential before traveling.

This guide explains the business visa requirements for Indonesia in 2026, including visa types, permitted activities, sponsor obligations, documentation, and how a business visa differs from a work permit or Investor KITAS.

This guide covers short-term business visas. If you intend to establish a company, invest, or work in Indonesia on a longer-term basis, see our related guides: Investment Regulations in Indonesia 2026 and Minimum Capital for PT PMA Indonesia.

What Is a Business Visa?

A business visa allows foreign nationals to enter Indonesia for non-employment commercial activities. It permits activities such as attending meetings, negotiating contracts, conducting market research, attending conferences or trade shows, and performing audits or short-term training.

A business visa does not permit the holder to work for an Indonesian company, receive a salary from an Indonesian source, or engage in hands-on employment. If your purpose of travel involves working in Indonesia, you will need a work permit and a limited stay permit (KITAS) instead.

Types of Business Visas in Indonesia

Indonesia’s business visa framework generally includes the following categories:

Visa on Arrival (VOA) / B1 Visitor Visa

For short business meetings alongside tourism or other visitor purposes. Typically allows a 30-day stay, extendable once for another 30 days. Available to eligible nationalities through the e-VOA system or on arrival at designated entry points.

Single-Entry Business Visa (B211B)

Allows one continuous stay, generally up to 60 days upon entry, with the possibility of onshore extensions (commonly up to a maximum of 180 days total across extensions, subject to immigration approval). Once the holder exits Indonesia, the visa becomes void and cannot be reused.

Multiple-Entry Business Visa (D212)

Designed for business travelers who need to enter and exit Indonesia repeatedly over an extended period — commonly valid from 1 to 5 years, depending on immigration approval. Each individual stay within that validity period is still subject to a maximum duration per entry (commonly 60 days), regardless of the visa’s overall validity.

Note: Visa naming conventions and durations are subject to change by the Directorate General of Immigration. Investors should confirm current requirements directly with immigration authorities or a licensed visa professional before applying.

What Activities Are Permitted on a Business Visa?

Business visas generally permit:

• Attending business meetings and negotiations
• Conducting market research or feasibility studies
• Attending conferences, seminars, or trade shows
• Conducting audits or inspections
• Short-term, non-hands-on training or knowledge transfer
• Exploring investment

What Activities Are Not Permitted?

Business visas do not permit:

• Working for or being employed by an Indonesian company
• Receiving salary or payment from an Indonesian source
• Performing hands-on operational or production work
• Long-term

Foreign nationals who intend to work or reside in Indonesia on an ongoing basis should instead apply for the appropriate work permit and KITAS, or an Investor KITAS if their purpose is tied to shareholding in a PT PMA.

Who Needs a Business Visa?

Generally, any foreign national visiting Indonesia specifically for commercial activities beyond what a standard tourist or visitor visa permits should apply for a business visa. Requirements and exemptions can vary by nationality, so investors should check current visa-free or VOA eligibility for their specific passport before assuming a business visa is required.

Business Visa Document Requirements

While specific requirements can vary depending on visa type and nationality, a typical business visa application generally requires:

• A valid passport (with sufficient remaining validity)
• A letter of invitation or sponsorship from an Indonesian entity
• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover the stay
• Completed application forms
• Passport-sized photographs
• Return or onward travel documentation, in some cases

The Sponsorship Requirement

A foreign national generally cannot self-sponsor a business visa. Indonesian immigration regulations require a registered Indonesian entity — a company, organization, or individual — to formally invite and vouch for the applicant. The sponsor typically assumes responsibility for the applicant’s conduct while in Indonesia.

If you don’t have a direct local business contact who can sponsor your visit, a registered corporate service provider can act as your sponsor for the application.

Application Process

While procedures can vary depending on visa type and nationality, the general process typically involves:

1. Determine the correct visa type based on your purpose of visit and frequency of travel.
2. Secure a sponsor — a business contact in Indonesia or a corporate service
3. Prepare documentation — passport, invitation letter, financial proof, and application forms.
4. Submit the application — online through the relevant immigration system, or through an authorized visa agent.
5. Receive approval and enter Indonesia — using the approved visa or e-Visa within its validity period.

Business Visa Extensions

Single-entry business visas can generally be extended onshore, subject to immigration approval, up to a maximum cumulative stay. Extensions typically need to be filed before the current visa expires, through the relevant immigration office or online system.

Multiple-entry visas do not require per-trip extension in the same way, but each individual stay is still capped, and re-entry does not restart or extend the visa’s overall validity period.

Business Visa vs. Work Permit (KITAS) vs. Investor KITAS

One of the most common points of confusion for foreign investors is assuming that any of these three categories can substitute for another. They serve different purposes:

Business Visa	Work Permit + KITAS	Investor KITAS
Purpose	Short-term commercial activities (meetings, research, negotiations)	Employment with an Indonesian company	Residency linked to shareholding in a PT PMA
Allows employment/salary	No	Yes, with sponsoring employer	No, unless combined with a separate work arrangement
Typical duration	Weeks to months (per entry)	1–2 years, renewable	Typically 2 years, renewable
Requires local sponsor	Yes	Yes (employer)	Tied to the PT PMA shareholding structure
Suitable for	Investors evaluating opportunities, attending meetings	Foreign employees working for an Indonesian entity	Investors holding shares above the applicable threshold who intend to reside in Indonesia

Using the wrong category — for example, conducting hands-on work while holding only a business visa — can result in immigration violations, regardless of the underlying business intent.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming a business visa allows employment. It does not. Any hands-on work or salaried role requires a work permit and KITAS.

Self-sponsoring without a registered entity. Applications generally require a valid Indonesian sponsor.

Confusing business visa validity with cumulative stay allowance. A multiple-entry visa’s multi-year validity does not mean unlimited continuous stay — each entry is still capped.

Overstaying without extension. Overstays can result in fines, blacklisting, or deportation, even for otherwise minor delays.

Assuming company ownership automatically grants immigration rights. Establishing a PT PMA does not by itself entitle a foreign shareholder to reside or work in Indonesia — a separate Investor KITAS or work permit process is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a business visa and a tourist visa in Indonesia?

A tourist or visitor visa is intended for leisure, family visits, or general travel and does not authorize formal business activities. A business visa specifically permits activities such as meetings, negotiations, and market research, though it still prohibits employment.

Can I do business meetings on a Visa on Arrival (VOA)?

In many cases, short business meetings are tolerated under a VOA or B1 visitor visa, but VOA is not designed for extensive or repeated business activity. For frequent or extended business travel, a dedicated single-entry or multiple-entry business visa is generally more appropriate.

Do I need a business visa if I already have an Investor KITAS?

If you hold a valid Investor KITAS tied to your shareholding, you generally do not need a separate business visa for entry, as the KITAS itself serves as your stay permit.

Requirements can vary, so this should be confirmed based on your specific visa category.

Can a business visa be converted into a work permit or KITAS?

Business visas are not intended as a pathway to employment. Foreign nationals who wish to work in Indonesia should apply for the appropriate work permit and KITAS through their sponsoring employer, rather than attempting to convert a business visa.

How long does a business visa application typically take?

Processing times vary depending on visa type, nationality, and application channel, ranging from a few days for e-Visa applications to longer periods for manual processing. Investors should apply well in advance of their intended travel date.

How Batin-hub Advises on This

Immigration status cannot be assessed in isolation from a foreign investor’s corporate structure. Whether a business visa, work permit, or Investor KITAS is the appropriate route depends on the shareholding structure, the nature of the individual’s role, and the underlying PT PMA — questions that are best addressed together with the company’s legal structuring, not as a separate matter afterward.

Batin-hub advises foreign investors and businesses on immigration matters as part of the broader corporate and regulatory picture, including business visa sponsorship, Investor KITAS and work permit applications, and how these obligations interact with a company’s ongoing compliance requirements.
